Six-Year-Old Suspended From Kindergarten Over Mohawk

Bryan Ruda already has a black mark on his Permanent School Record and he's just six years old.

Six-year-old Bryan was suspended from a Northeast Ohio Parma Community School kindergarten because of his hair style, a newly styled mohawk.

Bryan's mom, Michelle Barrie, is upset over the school board's decision to suspend her son, claiming his hair was a "distraction" to other students.
"How can they come to a decision if they've never even seen him?" Barile asked, referring to the board's action.

"I understand they have a dress code," she said. "I understand he has a uniform. But this is total discrimination. They're singling out my son. They can't tell me how I can cut his hair."
Unfortunately for Ms. Barrie, she'll come to realize that school boards can dictate what hair style her son can or cannot wear to school. The school already has a dress code, the students wear uniforms, in all probability hair styles also lean to the conservative side.

Barrie is teaching her six-year-old son that being "hip" and "cool" takes precedence over learning your A-B-C's. She's also subjected him to suspension plus he now has to back his Mommy against the mean old school board over a hair issue which will in all probability confuse the poor kid even further.

Parents need to realize that dress codes are usually in place for reason and that, yes, a mohawk, while "hip" would be distracting to other students.

In this case it's not Bryan who needs to grow up, but his mother.
