Barack Obama:
Supporters Defy "Cult of Personality" Charges
By Stumping for National Obama Holiday

Might this be just a bit premature?

Plans are being formulated to promote a national holiday--for Barack Obama?

Obama, who is president-elect and has a number of interestingly-named websites, will become the nation's 44th president on January 20.

From the Topeka Capital-Journal, Planning under way for Obama holiday:

"Yes We Can" planning rallies will be at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the downtown McDonald's restaurant, 1100 Kansas Ave., until Jan. 13. The goals are to secure a national holiday in Obama's honor, to organize celebrations around his inauguration and to celebrate the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12 1809.

At 7:30 a.m. on Inauguration Day, Obama Cake will be served at the downtown McDonald's, and a celebration is scheduled for 8 p.m. to midnight Jan. 20 at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, 420 S.E. 6th.

No word if Kool-Aid will be served with the Obama cake.

As a comment left on the C-J website exclaims, "Are you freakin kidding me? A national holiday for a guy who hasn't even shown if he can lead? He may be the president elect, but he hasn't even proven that he has what it takes to lead this country."

We will note for the record that Obama does has accomplishments:
  • He has headed up a presidential campaign
  • Has named two people to important posts in his incoming administration
  • Garnered 52% of the country's support in the just-completed election
  • Authored two autobiographical memoirs
  • Been a member of the U.S. Senate for almost four years
  • Excited supporters, and
  • come up with a variety of nifty pre-presidential seals featuring the words "Obama" and/or "Change"

January is already crowded with Hunt for Happiness Week (January 18-24); while January 20 is "Rid the World of Fad Diets and Gimmicks Day".

The month of January itself is recognized as California Dried Plum Digestive Month, among other things.

Why shouldn't he have his own holiday?

The King is honored (Elvis Presley Week(?) January 8-11), why not a day for The Messiah?
